What are your favorite obscure Atari 8-bit games?

$

0

Haven't seen one of these threads in awhile, and I always enjoy them. There are so many obscure titles in the 8-bit library, it's hard to find the time to play them all or even give them enough time to know them well. Many of my current favorite titles were discovered via recommendations here.

So, what are some of your favorite obscure, forgotten, or seldom mentioned games? They don't have to be exclusive titles, just ones you don't hear mentioned often.  Here are a few of mine:

1. Maxwell Manor: Hardly anyone ever mentions this. It's basically the Atari 2600 Adventure crossed with Haunted House, only in a huge world, with way more items and secrets, and a great deal more randomization. It's quirky and takes some time to get used to, but if you are a fan of those VCS titles, this is basically the A8 bit version we never officially got. If you like this, there is a sci fi one with the same engine called Mission at Thunderhead, which is even weirder.

2. Panther: Basically a very smooth and fast cross between Blue Max and Choplifter. Rescue little guys while shooting swarms of fighters with an isometric perspective. To me, this is what Blue Max 2001 should have been.

3. Stealth: Kind of a cross between afterburner and battlezone, great graphics, and very good play control.

4. Cavelord: This one is kind of a cavern shooter mixed with some rogue-like elements. Great play control, and a nice sense of progression. Tough too.

5. Lost Tomb: Aztec Berzerk set in a giant pyramid of interconnecting passages that you have to explore and find the way out of. This one is pretty clever. Sort of reminds me of what Quest for Quintana Roo was trying to do (and failed to) on the VCS.

6. Savage Pond: Weird action/ pond ecosystem arcade sim thing. Early 80's indie weirdness. Nothing else like it.

7. Gemstone Warrior:  Awesome, huge, challenging action rpg that plays surprisingly well today. Not much else like it, sort of zelda meets rogue. I can lose myself in this one all evening.

That's a few of mine. Anyone else like these or have some obscure Atari weirdness to share? I'm always down to play titles I haven't spent time with.

MIDI Interface

Hi,

I have decided to build myself a MIDI Interface for the Atari XL/XE. Based upon an old schematic from Elektronika Praktyczna (6/98), I came up with this:

midixlxe.png

It's 5cm x 5cm and supports MIDI IN/OUT/THRU. The device is turned on/off by the Motor Control Line.

Now the question is, would anybody else be interested in this and, if so, what would you like? PCB only, PCB+parts, or fully build? (all excl. SIO cable)

Note that I have not build anything yet, although some parts are on their way.

Regards,

Ivo

Atari 400 and 800 color flyers from 1980 and their hardware add on items

The Atari 400 and Atari 800 came out in 1979 and then was discontinued in 1992 (4 million units were sold).  I never owned an Atari 400, or Atari 800. My first videogame system was the ColecoVision in 1982 and my first computer was the Expansion Module #3 ADAM computer in 1983. The ADAM was a more powerful computer when compared to the original Atari 400 and 800. However since the ADAM was only on the market between 1983-1985, a maximum of 500,000 ADAM computers was sold. The Atari 400 and Atari 800 were much more popular computers.

Back around 1981 Atari mailed me this Personal Computer Systems folder. The folder contained full page color flyers from 1980 on the Atari 400 and 800 computers and their hardware add on items. I am making these available for anyone that has not seen them. I wish I would have kept these flyers in better condition; they are 37 years old and showing their age.

Cable modems were a technology of the early 21st Century (around 2002 I owned my first cable modem). In the late 1990’s DSL became popular in some areas. However in the 1980’s everyone used dial up modems to access BBS services and the early forms of what would become the Internet. The Coleco ADAM had a add on internal 300 baud modem that connected to the phone line directly (Later on up to 19,200 baud external modems were possible with the Coelco Adam). However the Atari 800 computer back in 1980 used an external 300 baud modem that required a physical landline telephone headset to sit on top of the modem. Its amazing how technology changes over the years.  Back in the 1980’s no one had cell phones except a few millionaires in select areas of the USA. Analog and digital cell phones started becoming somewhat popular in the early to mid 1990’s. But for many Americans it was not until around 2000 before people started getting their first cell phone.

Trouble installing Best 1200XL mylar

$

I'm trying to restore the 1200XL I found in the trash years ago. The keyboard was nonfunctional, so I ordered a replacement Mylar from Best. I cleaned the PCB and key caps, reinstalled everything, and...nothing. Just the reset key and maybe one other key worked. I installed the included thin wafer with gold contacts that goes between the Mylar and the PCB and this time, the O key was stuck on; a few other keys worked but not many.

Best says not to remove the layer of carbon that's built up over the gold PCB contacts that make a connection with the circuit traces on the Mylar, but I'm wondering if that's the weak link in the equation. Any suggestions for what to try next?

NTSC vs PAL carts/boxes

is there a difference between the two? I was looking at ebay and I noticed some sellers from europe said pal in the description but it looked exactly the same as some  US sellers or games I have in my collection. I also noticed jaguar games have 3 languages on the back of the box is that common for all, and the red box underneath is written in another language. I also heard Jaguar doesnt have a region lock out and the system automatically adjusts itself depending what cartrdidge you put in.

Hi,

I collected many Atari 8-bit stuff on GitHub, I was just curious what I will find. Not included: 2600, 5200, ST/STE, Lynx... Probably some links include them as part of the project.

Need someone to test and critique Jaguar Prototype cartridge PCBs

$

0

I hired someone to draw up some files so I could order some Atari Jaguar PCB's for prototyping.  I hoped to make a few games for myself and perhaps sell blank PCB's if anyone is interested.

My initial order of boards have an issue which was graciously pointed out by zerosquare.  Pins 34B and 35B are shorted to VCC instead of being bridged to each other.  I now have to wonder if there are any other potential issues.

Is anyone willing to take a look at one of these boards ( I will ship a blank one to you) and do some testing to see if any other corrections need to be made?

I need to be absolutely sure everything is correct before placing another order.

Cost of blank PCB's will depend on the amount I order.  I anticipate cost being $10 shipped (In the USA) or less.

If anyone does lend a hand I can send you some free PCB's from the order.  Let me know what you think.

Thanks.

And we have these types of manual covers for peripherals.

Did Atari ever produce manual covers for the 400 and 800 computers in the style shown here for the peripherals?

1040STF PSU parts replacement parts question

$

Got home and pull put the ASP34-1 bad psu I have. I did some quick multimeter testing on all the major caps. None are bulging, or leaking from under that I can see with out removing them. They all get response from the meter. (yes I know it is not the best way to test, but its all I got) The only unit I get no response from is a cap in position C2, an orange ceramic cap. It is labeled OCS 222M on one side and the other:
580-2         400V
            +              ~ Y
665-1   s    EW1

What dose this mean?
is this a good replacement
http://frys.com/product/1792445?site=sr ... IN_RSLT_PG
Fry's only seems to have 50v and 1000V ceramic caps when i filter with 220M. Any word about NTE caps? I works at Fry's Electronics, and we sell this line of parts. I do not know if NTE is just the distributor, or manufacturer. But, I get a discount on purchases. I do know that most of these parts have been hanging in the stores, in the original packages for several years. So no heat or humidity issues during their non use life.
Thanks

Atari 2600 CVS Gamline flyers, Foot Craz flyer, and other various stuff

$

My first videogame system that I officially owned was the ColecoVision in 1982 and it had state of the art arcade graphics and sound (near arcade quality when compared to some arcade games that were very advanced). I also purchased Expansion module #3 the ADAM computer system in order to play advanced Supergames up to 256K in size. However sometime around 1983, I decided to purchase the Coleco Expansion Module #1 the Atari 2600 adapter. Even though the ColecoVision and ADAM had better graphics and sound, in the early 80’s there was unique arcade games I wanted that were exclusive to the Atari 2600. Outlaw, Space invaders, Asteroids, and Missile Command were just a few of the games I liked for the Atari 2600 since they were the same quality or very close to the arcade quality. Therefore, with the ColecoVision/ADAM in 1983 I could play ADAM Supergames, ColecoVision standard cartridge games, and classic Atari 2600 games.

I noticed over the years that Atari started changing the instruction manual design for some videogames. For example the Outlaw videogame stayed exactly the same, but attached is a scan of the front cover of two different styles of Outlaw game instruction manuals (there are many other Atari 2600 games that received changes to their instruction manuals over the years).

I also use to own the Foot Craz controller for the Atari 2600 (I sold both the controllers to someone many years ago and it appears I did not keep any for myself). The Foot Craz controller was an exercise controller that one had to use their feet with special games. I never got into that controller but attached is the full page flyer on the device. I also had a skiing controller that used ones feet with the Atari 2600, but that is something I do not have anymore.

I never owned the CVS Gameline cartridge for the Atari 2600, however I attached a consumer letter and full page brochure regarding that unique product.

Syquest 44mb hard drive (ICD)

I recently scored an ICD 44mb disk cartridge drive from ebay along with 3 disk cartridges and a 520st.  Its not marked but i'm assuming the drive mechanism is the syquest sq555

My problem is that the drive did not come with any documentation or software.   I can find some generic SQ555 documentation on the web but nothing specific to an Atari ST implementation or specific to ICD's product.

So i'm hoping someone can help point me at some ICD documentation and also their software driver utilities/tools or other alternative formatting / management software.  I guess the HDDRIVER software may be an option but its pricey.

Turgen System - A Feature to be Depreciated

$

0

Hello Turgen System users,

I would like to know your opinion on depreciating one of the least used features in Turgen System.
In order to streamline the source code of Turgen System, the following feature becomes a candidate for depreciation.

Tape Images with trXX blocks

This feature was originally added to extend .CAS file format to hold data stored with various turbo systems. This "standard" never became widespread and the only utilities that support these trXX blocks are Turgen System, CAS COM, and ATART 2.00. The trXX blocks are superseded by the pwmX blocks introduced by the A8CAS project.

By removing this feature, the following will be lost:

  • Writing tape images with trXX blocks
  • Reading tape images with trXX blocks
  • Extraction of data from tape images with trXX blocks
  • Transfer of Turbo 2000 files through SIO2PC or ATART interface from PC to Atari.

By removing the feature, the following will be gained:

  • Complex code processing tape images with trXX blocks will be removed from various parts of Turgen System
  • Code of the signal generator will be streamlined and slightly downsized

The latest version of Turgen System that supports the trXX blocks will be archived and preserved.

If you have any objections, now it is the right time to state them!

Help required: Whats wrong with my 800XL?

Hi, I have recent purchased a 800XL (PAL) and paired it with a SIO2SD external drive, all appears to work fine, expect on a lot of games I'm getting a corrupted sprite, and I'm not sure why, would anyone be able to shed light on what may be causing this? Configuration, software, PAL/NTSC issue, RAM or Antic failure? Note that some games appear to run perfectly. Also passes memory tests fine. :(

I apologize for the poor photos, but you can see the corrupted missile or sprite running vertically down the display, these will follow the player or enemies.

Flickering Pixel. Bad RAM?

$

I've got a question for those who are knowledgeable about the inner workings of the Lynx.

My Lynx II has had a flickering pixel ever since I got it.  I thought it was an LCD problem.  But I've just installed a McWill LCD, and the exact same pixel is still flickering.

This obviously indicates the problem was NOT with the LCD, but is on the main PCB somewhere.  So, if any of you are Lynx hardware experts, where do you think the failure lies here?

My suspects would either be one of the RAM chips or Mikey.  Obviously it would be easier to replace the RAM chips (and I have the equipment/skills required to do so) but I'd like some

confirmation that that's where the issue would most likely lie before proceeding.  I have a feeling if it turns out to be Mikey I'd be better off just getting a replacement Lynx (unless anyone

knows where I could get a Mikey chip by some chance).  So what do you think?  Replace RAM, or go ahead and look for a new Lynx?
