Strat-O-Gems Deluxe menu screen?

Today I wanted to play Strat-O-Gems Deluxe after a while again. So I was looking for the instructions and found this website. And I got a 32K ROM from 1/18/2006 (see attachment). But I didn't manage to get to the selection menu screen as described in the manual on page 9.

Did I get the wrong ROM? And if yes, where can I find the correct one?

What Can You Do With an Atari 400?

What is the limit of what you can do with an unmodded Atari 400? Cartridge games? Tape drive? I'm fairly certain it can't handle the floppy drive. What has been your experience?

600XL Serial Number

Hi all,
Yesterday, I finished restoring a 600XL that belonged to my dad back in the day. After finishing up an inspection and Retrobriting, I became interested in the serial number (which sadly peeled off after removing the yellowing but, I took a picture beforehand).
I'm waiting on a power supply to arrive, so I'm using my time to learn more about the 600XL. I've browsed around and have not seen anything similar to my number.
Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Also, I can provide pictures of the chips and box if needed (which should narrow it down since it's the 1984 Olympics box). Thanks ahead of time for taking the time to read this.

Eastern House tapes

I got a couple of these in a lot, and they are both handwritten. I'd assume they are pirate junk but who pirates stuff and writes a copyright date on the label? Could they be originals?

Anyway, these aren't available on Atarimania, so I am wondering if I need to set them aside to dump in case they are still needed, whether they are originals or not.

Help with Atari 1040 STf

If any of you have some words of wisdom I would appreciate it.

I acquired a large lot associated with an Atari 1040 STf (SF354, color and monochrome monitors, disk master, monitor master, GT-1000, SyQuest SQ555, Spectre GCR, MagicSac etc.) along with about 500 pieces of software.  It has been stored for quite a long time but I was anxious to start exploring.  The problem is I can't get it to boot.  The power light comes on, but that is the extent.  No sound from the internal floppy drive with a disk in it, no attempt to access the SF354 when connected.  The image on the monitors does change as the power is turned on and off to the 1040 like the monitors are recognizing that a device is connected.  Please excuse the ignorance of my questions, and hopefully I can learn something.

1)  Is it possible that this unit was configured to boot from something other than ROM?  Will it boot from ROM if those other devices are not connected or configured properly?  I am trying to determine if I likely have a hardware issue as opposed to a configuration/connection issue.

2)  What should I go about checking first, second, third, etc. since it seems that the power supply is working?

I have a digital multimeter and at least a rudimentary understanding of electronics.

Thank you!

Does removing U1MB battery blank U1MB ?

Can't imagine this but does removing the battery from the U1MB wipe it's programming ?

Or does it merely stop backing up the clock ? (Which I think it does).

AFAIK ROM slots etc. are flash so not depending on the battery back-up power ?

Is a 7800 a complete replacement foe a 2600?

Hi I'm Marc and I have a problem. JK, I'm sure everyone here has the same issue. I have consoles with the ability to play games from 13 systems so I love versatility as it saves space, wiring and sometimes money. However I am looking to get into 2nd gen consoles from scratch. I know I want a Colecovision and 2600 at the least. I was wondering if the 7800 can completely replace the 2600. If it can do everything the 2600 can I will hold out for one of those. What percentage of the games work on it, what is the controller situation like, is it a bear to find tv connectors for? Just basic questions before I trek all over the midwest to find one.

Atari 130 XE Cheap-A$$ Construction

$

Okay, I've always known the 130XE's were cheap. I hear all the things people say about them, but I just opened one up for the first time, and ... wow.

The case and keyboard are held together by 4 screws.

The bottom RF shield doesn't have the little thin piece of cardboard to keep the pins from shorting to the shield. The board just feels flimsier, I was shocked they wasted 8 screws holding the board in.

It's a wonder any of these even work anymore.

Was the Commodore 64 constructed so cheaply? I mean, I get the impression the reason they went so cheap was to compete with Commodore. How did Commodore undercut Atari so much if they did not use similar cheap construction?

Telengard-BASIC debugging challenge

$

I recently bought a MIB version of the classic Avalon Hill RPG, Telengard. It's a BASIC program. It seems to have a bug. It happens when you go to load your saved game back up again. I downloaded a version from Atarimania, hoping it was something that was fixed somewhere along the line all these years (1982). And although the Atarimania version has been hacked for auto-load instead of having to type: Run "D:TELEN.BAS," but alas, the loading bug is in it too. But maybe it's a BASIC A rev. thing? Or is there a known working version out there?

But if it isn't a BASIC revision thing and know one has debugged it in all these years, then I challenge any and all Atari BASIC programmers to solve the problem.

The first thing you will notice is that the character name comes back with a corrupted character name, and the program immediately halts with the following error message: ERROR- 8 at line 1275

It's been 30 years since I even typed in a BASIC program, with my one semester of  BASIC programming knowledge, long since lost for lack of use. But I do realize that the bug may be deeper than the one line of code, but it looks like there is corruption in that one line itself, with the weird looking...well see for yourself in the picture or program listing on your own.

You'll have to play the game long enough to choose a character and return to the inn and save progress. There is a staircase you start at the bottom of when the game first starts. Push "U" to go up it into the inn and save the game.

The Casten Disk ANTIC's JD CASTEN Games

$

I have almost all of the old Antic Mags/disks.  I still like to read them now and again, usually in bed readying myself for sleep.  I got interested in all the JD Casten programs, games.  His stuff was pretty good for the day.  Hard for me to play, but nicely laid out games.   I always wanted to get The Casten Disk from Antic Publishing $10, but never ordered.   Anyone have it?  I went through all my disks and made a sorta Casten disk, but I am missing the bonus programs, industrial versions of his games.

I still can't play the games well, but am still having a good time trying to.

Anyone else appreciate Casten's work?

Hi,

I was wondering if Manual Rotschkar is still involved in programming or if he is a member of the forums. He should be called Manual Rockstar. His games are killer. Seawolf, Gunfight, Starfire, Crazy Balloon. If you're seeing this: Thank you!
