Homebrews vs the original 59

Since there are so many damn good Homebrew games now... do you think it's possible that the top ten best games in the 7800 library are all either home brew/ re-releases/ prototypes and hacks, with none of the OG 59 making the cut???

Atari VCS officially at 40?

$

Good evening,

I'm writing out of curiosity's sake to see if anyone is in the know as to whether or not the VCS has officially turned 40 this August.  From what I've seen, there's disparate "release dates" for the system.  Wikipedia quotes 11 September 1977 as its release date, but cites no source for that date (not really surprising).  I've also seen 14 October 1977 listed as the system's release date on other sites (and Wiki back in the day), but again, no citations.  Meanwhile, the most solid evidence I've seen is over at Atari Compendium, which has a link to a newspaper advertisement from 1 August 1977, listing the system as available for $169.99, and making August 2017 the VCS's 40th anniversary.  Does anyone else here know of any other evidence for the later dates, or where they may have come from?

Cheers,

BB

Escape 2042, any news on release date yet?

As Orion_ mentioned in his thread about having to sell his jaguar stuff, i became reminded of his game Escape 2042 being delayed for the jaguar release.

Im curious as to when this is planned to be released? I dont want to miss out on Orion_'s swan song game for the jag, so if anyone in the know could let the rest of us know roughly when this game will be released, i would be highly appreciative. Makes planning for the expense easier.

Accelerators - Any Clock Doubled 6502s?

$

My understanding of Atari 8-bit accelerators is you have 'the high end' which are 65c816 chips and boards running at 14-20 MHz..    Costing something like ~ 200 USD / 170 EU such as the Rapidus.

There are also versions of the 65c816 that plug into the 6502 socket directly that would be running at the stock 1.77/1.79 MHz but give you a boost on certain instructions;  though it's not a major boost like going from a not fully pipelined processor to fully pipelined (i.e. 386 to 486).

But I have not seen any low cost options such as a clock doubled 6502, which while it would be limited by the bus and RAM speed shared with ANTIC, I think would help performance since many 6502 instructions have quite a lot of latency.

Is such a thing possible?   If you believe there would be no benefit to this approach, please explain..   I see exxos's  (impressively low cost) accelerators for the ST that double the clock to 16 MHz on the 68000 and provide useful benefits in many applications and would think the 6502 being primitive and not pipelined would similarly work better at 3.54-3.58 MHz than stock..

I'm new to this forum.

I bought a 2600jr off ebay. It included a RF switch to plug into the TV. I pluged in everything; when I turn on the TV (I get the below picture) and there is static for the sound.

How can I fix this?

Don't know a lot about the 2600 since it has been a long time since I owed one.

5200 Flip Cover Replacement

Does anyone have a source for the smoked plastic flip up cover on the 5200 (example attached)?  It's a part that is often broken or missing and seems like it would be the sort of thing someone would be selling.  Best Electronics has none in stock.

It could potentially be 3D printed, but is too big to be done by most any home printers.  I suspect there would be a market for this part, but not a big enough market to actually do even a tiny production run.  Any thoughts?

I am thinking of buying a supercharger and four or five cassettes from a local video game store. He is selling them as is. Do the tapes have any problems working after all these years? How are the games?

So i heard about this project of making a new Doom game for the Jag from the published Jag Doom source code. The prospect of improved resolution, added enemies and gameplay mechanics sounded exciting. What happened to that?

We are now taking orders for the Lynx reprints of some Lynx games we previously released: Hotdog and Relief Pitcher.

Additionally, we are distributing the initial release of a prototype LX.net discovered. The game is called Quadromania, an action-puzzle game similar to Dr. Mario.

The new version of AVP is available in limited numbers... the version available is the 07.13.1994 which, despite being the earliest, we consider the most complete (has both types of enemies (alien, human) and has textured walls, ceiling, floor. Sage has also restored the alien as a playable character.

A link to information about Quadromania is available here.

A link to information about AVP is available here.

To keep this release on schedule the links are NOT integrated into our site but that will be fixed shortly. The features were written 2 years ago and use a different style sheet and directory structure than our current site.

The cost of the games are the same as before, $35 + S&H. Shipping will be actual cost determined when we are ready to start taking payment (next monday or tuesday).

Please email orders to betaphasegamesorders@yahoo.com - and include your address so we can calculate shipping please let us know if you previously ordered KA Aircars. We may combine shipping.

Attached is a pic of the games, same back and interior as last time. The cover artwork has been improved... big thanks to deviant art member Pure1Water for working on the Hotdog cover art.

Hotdog, Relief Pitcher, and AVP are the small PLCC chips soldered onto the PCB.

Quadromania is the larger chip soldered onto a red PCB. Will be updating the site and providing more pics soon.

EDIT: We will respond to orders on monday or tuesday once we get some shipping quotes.

Beta Phase Games is happy to announce the release of Quadromania, an action-puzzle game discovered by LX.net. It was developed in 1993 by RPM software and demo'd for Atari, but little information was publicly available about it until it was discovered in 2013.

We are publishing the first batch for LX.net.

You can find out more information on it at our webite here.

Or you can view the Youtube video that was published a few years ago.

Let's figure out when most people could buy VCS Superman

$

There seems to have been a small run of Superman cartridges in December of 1978 to go with the movie premier:

retrothing.com/2013/06/its-an-8-bit-bird-its-a-blocky-plane-its-its-atari-2600-superman.html#comment-6a00d83452989a69e201bb08b2866d970d

But most people couldn't get their hands on it until sometime in 1979.

The gamasutra article below has many release date errors, but it also has release dates that are correct, so each release date needs to be triple checked. This is what it says about Superman:

www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3766/atari_the_golden_years__a_.php?print=1

"Superman was released in mid-1979, beating Adventure, which was released for Christmas that year."

Does anyone have any personal memories seeing the game in stores or receiving it for a birthday in June or July? Have you found any ads in newspapers or magazines that might give us a month in 1979?

Connecting old systems like 2600 to modern TVs?

$

Ok so most modern TVs no longer accept an analog signal.  Is there some kind of converter box that will convert an old RF analog signal to HDMI inputs?

There must be some doing that here as I doubt everyone has access to old CRTs (or maybe they do?)

Atari Falcon 030 - Hz Switching

Hi Guys,

I got a Falcon 030 yesterday, and have never used one before, so forgive the NOOB question!

I think it's a UK spec machine (I am in the UK) as it has a £ sign on the keyboard, but it boots into 60Hz everytime I power it up. I plan to use it to run demos and games (especially when I get a CF hard disk in there) and I can't seem to be able to get the refresh rate to switch from 60Hz into 50Hz - I have a couple of Hz switch programs, but not sure if they are designed for the ST range only, as they do not appear to work! I am using this with an RGB Scart cable on a Sony CRT TV, not a VGA monitor.

If anyone can tell me how (if it's hardware), or point me in the direction of some software that will let me run in 50Hz, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Paul

Problem with "Steel Talons" on gen 1 Lynx

I purchased a new sealed in box "Steel Talons" game for my Lynx. Plugged it in the Lynx and only goes to title screen and freeze. When I press the button fast enough it will go to white screen. All other games play fine on it.

Anyone had a problem with new games not working? I tried cleaning (it was new, so looked clean anyways), and nothing.

Who dares ;)

Before the oncoming apocalypse, the small ATARI needs some real music ;)
Since no one cares, I hope , some coder could help here.
I found out that the best source for creating POKEY tunes will be "GOAT Tracker" . It offers to put the music on the SID platform, but also keeps all necessary steps to create the needed FX on 3 channels.
As we don't have such a tracker, RMT is the tool, to adjust the tune, Altirra helps for finetuning, to reach at least the best available "music" for POKEY.

As it is very time intensive to convert the instruments to an audible level, a converter for some basic features of the tunes could be useful.

Ofcourse, the song itself, notes on each channel. Instruments fitting on a volume level/time. The needed FX to put into the instrument's name.

U-switch with Stereo Pokey and U1MB

OK.

Wel all know that Lotharek has great products.

We also all know that his.....instructions aren't usually the clearest.

So...I'm (finally) installing my Stereo Pokey and U1MB into one of my 600XL's. Now....considering instructions I found this on Lotharek's site:

Now. I understand the switch part. You simply solder the PCB to the Stereo Pokey PCB like that, and it will "act" just like a DPST switch.

However, what about the rest. I can figure out that I will need to connect 1 wire from the U1MB M0 pin to the one arrowed. Clear enough.

But what is that jumper ? And why wound't I hardwire it instead of soldering (a not included) header and put a removable jumper on it ? And why on that "1" setting ? What is the "2" setting ?

But the most important of all......doesn't the Vcc and Gnd need to be connected ? Will it work exactly as pictured ? And if so, how can it work like that because I guess there needs to be some operating voltage somehow ?

It's amazing that such simple things can't be clearly instructed in ONE go....seriously.....

SIDE3 Cartridge plastic size - Smaller? (hopefully?)

$

Hi folks!

The SIDE 2 is an epic cartridge,  but it's a little bit big fully assembled --

The plastic X/Y dimensions are too large for the 1200XL tunnel without the cartridge extension,

and the 'Z' height doesn't allow it to close under the Atari 800's lid.

Is there any chance the SIDE3 might fit in either/both of these?

I'm looking forward to ordering one anyway, but had to ask :)

Hi!

I was wondering if anyone sells bangs & boards, like for comic book storage, for Atari manuals? I would like to keep my loose manuals in nice shape and organized. Thanks!
