Happy Holidays (see inside)
When did you move on from your 8-bit and why?
I got a nice new 1040ST in 1987 and sold all my 8-bit stuff for money to buy stuff for my ST.
What a mistake ;(

RAPTOR Basic - Calling all testers and programmers
If you've been watching the programming forum (What? people post in there??) you might know that last weekend we released our RAPTOR library.
What this gives you is a very powerful BASIC with a full GPU/DSP back-end manager for all the hardware.
Attached to this post is an example binary, and the BASIC code in a zipfile.
If you would like to help test/expand this BASIC, please sign up at our forum and request access to the RAPTOR Basic dev forum. It's address is here:
http://dbug.kicks-ass.net/dbugforums/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl
Currently RBASIC has a full basic command set, plus:
RPRINT - direct access to RAPTOR Print to complement BASICs 'PRINT' command
U235PAD1 - function to read Jagpad1
RGETOBJ - function to read a RAPTOR object's values
RSETOBJ - function to set a RAPTOR object's value
RUPDALL - command to vsync and update all objects
RSETLIST - command to switch between RAPTOR lists
RHIT - function to call RAPTOR collision handler
Auto conversion of bitmap assets is also included, to make asset importing easier for the novice programmer.
These commands give you enough to start making very simple RAPTOR Basic games.
This is very real, and both ggn and myself are quite willing to continue working on this for the community to use. However, you have to show us we're not wasting our time. Over to you guys!
Here's the example program included:

Will SIO2PC work on the 130XE?
Before I order a SIO2PC, I just wanted to make sure that it will work on an 130XE?
Thanks,
Michael
Taking another shot at getting my V2 Ultimate working...
After throwing in the towel with my original 800XL installation, I thought I'd have another go at it. My original V2 was re-flashed, and although the 1 Mb flash chip could not be re-flashed, I replaced it with the currently used model (ST, IIRC). My Ultimate worked in the original flash package, but I could not seem to get the OS re-flashed with the ones that I wanted -- only the original flash package seemed to work. I could re-flash it fine with the original file, but no other. (???!) So here we go again...
Looking at the docs at Lotharek's site, I see "make proper connection to cpu" (pins 39, 36, 40, 35) (Top to bottom on the P2 connector.)
What are the best connection points for the XE and XL (if different)? IIRC, Candle said that he would not suggest soldering these directly to the cpu. But presume that under the board would be OK? BTW, I have one of Dropcheck's MMU adapters for this.
Also, presume that my re-flashed V2 connects to the same points?
Assuming all goes well, I'll get FJC's latest Ultimate flasher and have another stab at putting in my choice of OS.
Thanks,
Larry
What would a re-flashable OS module look like?
Maybe with 4 OS only -- no ram expansion, etc. What would it take in the way of connecting points to re-flash it? I presume this would greatly reduce the need for the big ribbon cables and fairly large board over the Ultimate?

Are there any advantages to getting a Flashback 64?
I have all the other "Flashbacks". Are there any advantages to getting a Flashback 64?

Thoughts on Raptor and coding for the Jaguar...
So just the other night, I managed to successfully compile my very first *working* Jaguar program by using the new Raptor development package that was recently released. It may not have been my own, but I did edit just a few things before giving it a go.
This is probably as striaght forward as it gets into getting someone that doesn't know a thing about coding or wanting to learn to dive right in and start playing around and tinkering with a nice foundation of various examples included. I'm not a coder but always thought it would be fun to put something, anything, together on the Jaguar just for fun. Everything that I've come across in the past has never worked right, linked incorrectly, required lots of rummaging around to create the proper directories based on what was released, etc. etc. but this was ready to go, right out of the box and I'm rather impressed for what it is.
It took me longer to download and unzip the package than it did for me to edit some source and compile a working Jaguar file. Granted, I do vaguely remember BASIC from my childhood so I'm not completely new to programming and I've probably been in every ROM released for the Jaguar in a HEXeditor in some fashion or other, so I kind of know what I'm looking at in that sense. I already had Virtual Jaguar installed so I don't really count that as part of the equation but I would say it took me about 4 minutes to see the source, edit just a few things including text and a TGA graphic I wanted to test out, click the included batch file to compile (which I was for sure wouldn't work based on past experience) and to my surprise, not only did it compile the code without a hitch, it also launched Virtual Jaguar and there it was... my slightly modified Jaguar code up in running. 5 minutes, tops.
So for anyone that has ever wanted to do any sort of programming on the Jaguar to any extent and doesn't mind using Virtual Jaguar, I highly recommend you take the time to check this package out located in the programming section here on AA, which is probably easily overlooked since this is the core discussion regarding the Jaguar. My nephew is 11 and I'm going to pass this entire thing off to him this weekend to get his feet wet into learning how to modify and add graphics and sound because he's always wanted to make his own game but like most people, doesn't have the slightest clue where to start when it comes to programming a console. What better place than a 64-bit Jaguar?
Anyways, kudos to the team of guys who put this all together. I haven't even had a chance to read the included manual and rushed to download and test it out, outside of seeing it on the Reboot site but will give it all more of a lookover later when time permits. Awesome work guys!
How many Nintendo games were on the 2600?
I know that on the 2600 Atari published Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong & DK Jr. were published by Coleco, but did any other Nintendo games find their way to the 2600?
SIO2SD quandary
The SIO2SD "cased" version is 71.99 EUR (it includes cable) also at Lotharek.
I can likely find a decent enclosure and probably come up with a reasonable rewire for the buttons etc etc .... a DIY project for sure.
So the question is: are the extra ~40 EUR for the "cased" version justified?
It seems a little steep (it doubles the price) and it is so far what stopped me from the purchase.
It would likely take me an afternoon of tinkering to get "an enclosure" up and running or wire the thing directly inside my XEGS with proper holes for the display, displaced push buttons and a DPDT switch on Vcc and GND in case I'll ever need real SIO access (unlikely).
Keep in mind that I find it a lot of fun to tackle this kind of projects although I usually budget 1 or 2 Hs I now know better and I know it'll suck up at least a whole afternoon because you know ... shit happens ... all the time.
Given Lotharek products are all CNC made why does the plastic casing costs so much?
Am I missing something? Is the "cased" version a different, more advanced release?
ACE-DT-80-Dumb-Terminal-Emulator Cartridge
Anyone have one of these?
Anyone have the manual if one came with it?

I have a unit sans power supply and since I don't have batteries at the moment was wondering if a standard 2600 power supply will work.
Jog my memory - once rare Atari(TM) game that's not any more
The rarity guide doesn't give any indication of when entries were revised, so I'm trying to jog my memory from back in the 2000's. It seems to me at one time there was a "unbelievably rare" Atari made game that was a 9 or 10 on the list. Suddenly a few copies showed up complete in the box for IDK - $90? $150? I snagged one. Then I believe it turned out the copies that were showing up was from a warehouse in Brazil or Mexico where they had all just been sitting on a pallet for years and once the word got out everybody got one and it went from "unbelievably rare" to "meh."
Now I could be mad about it, but the thing is... I don't even remember what game it is! And what's funny to me is that if it went from a 10 to a 5 in the last ten years, I don't think I want to keep it sealed in the box any more - unless I already have one loose. I just don't know what game it was for sure. I'm guessing it's not BMX Airmaster since that still seems to have it's super rare status. Was it MotoRodeo? Silver label Gravitar? What was it?
I'll find my box and bust it open if it's worth peanuts, and laugh at myself for having been so gullible back then.
