The xex format

I realise this is my first post here on this forum and how people, in general, feel about first time posters. So I will tell you up front that I never owned an Atari, 8-bit or otherwise. I also did a lot of research in the hopes I didn't have to ask my question here.

I remember over 20 years ago asking a question in a Linux forum and getting replies like "You are an idiot". No, just because I don't know about a certain machine, operating system, or any such thing, does not make me an idiot. I of course may still be an idiot, but not based on those things.

I am very interested in the xex format used for Atari images. I understand that xex is just another alias for an executable format. And I also understand that executables can contain much more than just images, or not even images at all. I AM a programmer with 35 years or so of experience, after all.

So my question, stemming from ignorance, not stupidity, is: Is there any way to extract an image from an xex file and display it on another platform without running an emulator? Is there any description somewhere that is general? I doubt there is, but I'm hoping. I mean, I could easily create an executable to use any kind of format and display it. But it wouldn't display correctly on any other platform. So my best answer to my own question is "No", but maybe I am wrong.

Thank you.
