Is auto-fire considered cheating?

I am in the final stretch with "HAR'em". ATM I need to figure out how to deal with "auto-fire".
If you hold down the trigger, each shot type as a certain delay, so you have a disadvantage over those players who bash the buttons quickly.
However, when you use this "auto-fire" switch, some joysticks have, you are even quicker. The downside being that you shoot in bursts.

This wouldn't be much of problem, if using auto-fire wouldn't cause even more gfx glitches then there already are. Reason is, obviously, the cost for setting up a new bullet, which in turn delays drawing of the soft-sprites so they get drawn in the visible area. As redesigning the engine is not an option and spending more time optimizing stuff is neither, the question is:

Can I "solve" the problem like this: "Using auto-fire is cheating, so you have to live with the bad gfx!" :)
