Modern TV coaxial hookup- no sound

I was able to hook up my 2600 to one of my HDTVs with a coaxial/rf adapter and got a significant amount of static and scrolling. On my other- slightly older- HDTV I was able to get a beautiful clear picture, but no sound.

Why no sound? Any suggestions?
