Harware idea or might have been done already?

Was just sitting here mulling loads of things over, one of them was to spend more time getting my collection sorted so I can either post it to Usenet or as a torrent, and NO, I won't be asking for a single penny and as long as ALL agree its ok to do I'll do it the most popular way. But don't worry, I still have 52,000 dupes to remove one at a time so it won't be that soon.

The other thing was I was thinking about the issue I had with Sal with digital downloads of the carts and that's when I had a little brain splat, now Sal won't do Digital which I understand and my worry is my real hardware isn't exactly in pristine condition so here's the idea.

Would there be a way to make a unit to slot carts into that can be linked say by USB for an emulator to play them?

That way those of us who worry about our hardware could then happily purchase the carts knowing they were safe and still usable after the real HW dies?

Obviously this begs the emu teams to interface it and I'd also ask them to make it impossible to dump the cart from it just to satisfy softies that their stuff is safe.

Sound silly or not?

As my electronics stops after being able to read resistor colour codes and get electrolytic caps the right way around its not a project I could do but it might be something a few want?

Edit: Just thinking if it would be a possibility on the emulator, I'd presume the read from USB would create timing probs so I would assume it would have to be read in and made into a 'virtual' cart directly accessible to the emulator?

Just wondering from the boffins if that sounds feasible?
