Rewiring a 7800 Controller?

Is it easy to rewire a 7800 control pad so that the second button works a la the B and C buttons of a Megadrive controller?  I think it would look really cool alongside my 2600 Jr.  I also hate the other redundant buttons on a Megadrive controller.  It's not very elegant!
