Vacuum forming AtariAge plastic box inserts!

Here's a video I took earlier tonight when Ben Combee and I were vacuum forming plastic box inserts for the game Ixion, which will be released at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo in two weeks.

The idea to create these inserts came about because Sega shells don't fit very well in the paper inserts I use regular Atari 2600/7800 shells. This is due to the grip at the end of the cart, which makes the cartridge both wider and thicker at this point when compared to a regular Atari cartridge. This new box insert places the cartridge at the box opening, allowing for easy access to the cartridge without having to remove the entire insert.

Ben Combee did a great job creating the design and then building the wood molds we used tonight. They were cut and etched using a laser cutter, then glued together and sanded. These would not have happened at all without his hard work. After vacuum forming these inserts tonight., we came up with some ideas that will allow us to improve upon them for version 2.0. :)

I have a video of the laser cutter cutting and etching molds--will have to upload that tomorrow.
