Home-made cartridges

This thread occured to me as a result of a discussion over in the programming board. There, I am attempting to learn how to write code to run from a cartridge.  However as one of the chaps told me, using a cartridge is more about getting the data on to hardware than software considerations.  Therefore I thought it might be an idea to start a thread about making one's own cartridge.

Obviously there are already several very slick but also very complicated user-writeable cartridge system available - MaxFlash, SIC, MyIDE and so forth.  My question is, are there any plans available to make your own from spare parts?  Obviously an EEPROM progammer is required to physically write the data along with EEPROMS to be written.  However I dare say the hardest component to get hold of is the properly shaped PCB with the correct edge connectors.  Is it possible to get hold of these things from Maplins or wherever?
