Converter / Scaler for S-Video to Component or HDMI?

Hi,

Has anyone tried a Converter / Scaler for S-Video to Component or HDMI?  My current system does not display S-video properly, so I am looking for a solution.  There seem to be a lot of converters, ranging in price from $40-800, so I would appreciate any suggestions or experience with this process.
