I have a stock 800XL (Hong Kong) so it is an early model. Sure enough, when I use S-Video, it give me reasonably crisp, clear (for a stock XL) luma only. But if the plug gets pressed just right, I get pretty nice color S-Video. The logical explanation is that I'm picking up the composite signal from a bad plug or jack connection. But I've done this "use composite for the Chroma signal" thing before, and it *always* degrades the picture to become "fuzzy" like regular XL composite.
I'm thinking that the signal from the composite is attenuated such that it gives color (slightly less saturation, to my eyes), but doesn't overload the Luma signal with the "bad video." (?) Sooo, would this make a simple mod to get color by connecting the composite pin to the chroma pin using a low-ohm resistor? If so, any guesses as to the amount of resistance to be added?
Any thoughts?
