Left Controller Port Problem

Hello all. I have a 2600 that has always worked fine aside from the left controller port not working properly. Any controllers plugged into the left port would move around properly, but the fire button didn't work. The right port had no problem. I had asked around on here, and was told it was likely the left port was bad, or possibly needed resoldering. I disassembled the console and found that indeed, the port needed resoldering.
I have no soldering skills whatsoever, but was assured that it was easy by people here and elsewhere. As a result, I resolved to attempt a repair myself...
The results are disastrous.
Firstly, the port is now completely removed, and I consequently need a replacement. However, the spot on the board where the port attaches is covered with gobs of solder I can't figure out how to remove.
The worst bit, however, is that now I can't get my Atari to show any picture whatsover on a tv screen, and I'm terrified I somehow badly damaged the board.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can possibly salvage this mess?
