Notes on Mid-West Gaming Classic 2013

MGC 2013 ran for 2 days, March 23 and 24.

Daniel Iacovelli, Astropuff(Jason), RacerX (Bill Dermody), and myself ran Jagfest with 6 Jags, 3 Lynxs and a Nuon up and running. MGC had 4 Jag posters already up for us. Daniel also brought a lot of older stuff like JagFest magazines going back to the first year.

Saturday and Sunday were both very busy but felt like 2 different conventions. Sunday was kids day with lots of game play. Saturday felt more like Collectors Day with people looking for new and used deals.

Got to meet several people involved with the jag including the owner of console5.com who is carrying the new Jag releases ImpluseX and KM:F.

Speaking of ImpluseX and KM:F, I gave out information to about 15 people who were interested in buying them on Saturday. Not 1 request on Sunday. Worse for BlackOut. Only a few even looked at the box and no one tried out the game. KM:F suffered a little because it did not have a demo mode so I could not show it off when no one was playing.

Games played: Rayman and Tempest 2000 were easily the biggest hits but Doom and AVP got a lot of play. Flashback and Dragons Lair got a lot more play than I expected. My rapid fire Jagpad was a big hit with games like Raiden and Trevor McFurr. We had 3 different rotary controllers there and all got excellent reviews. NBA Jam, Defender 2000, ImpluseX, KM:F, and Downfall all saw decent play time. RacerX had a copy of Battlesphere Gold that got some interest. Late Saturday afternoon 2 Jags were linked for a little Battlesphere battle.

MGC held an after hours party for all volunteers in the arcade room Saturday night. Everything was set up for free play. I spent a couple of hours playing several different pinball machines. The newest pinball machine there, The Wizard of Oz, had a big crowd watching and waiting to play.

I finally got to walk around for a few minutes Sunday afternoon and saw game systems I had never heard of before.  One system that caught my eye and looked interesting was called The VideoBrain made in 1977.  Almost bought an Atari 7800 but was not sure if it was worth the $65 they wanted for it.

PIctures have been posted in several links:

NOTE: This write up is my take on MGC 2013. Since most of the time I was only watching a couple of Jags, RacerX, Astropuff and Dan may have a slightly different take (And hopefully will share them with us).
